"This album features a collection of traditional music from Latin American countries. For generations listeners have enjoyed these timeless classics performed on the guitar, piano or by an ensemble. Now they can be performed just as beautifully on the concert marimba. While compiling this album, I purposely selected tunes that display a variety of melodies and rhythms, including the ever-so-popular waltz, the Cuban danzon, the Puerto Rican danza, and the Venequelan joropo. In order to allow this lyrical music to achieve it's fullest expression, the performer will have to provide appropriate interpretation and apply musical finess!

To help with performance preparation, I have furnished a brief explanation and digital recording for each piece of music in this collection. Should you master this music, you will not only improve your musicianship, but also your ability as a solosist. Most certainly, your audience will enjoy listening to this music filled with memorable melodies and lively rhythms!

This little jewel of the marimba literature. It’s a short piece that Orlando Cotto recorded and then later had transcribed for publication. The form of the piece is a vague ternary, with an opening “melody” of merely a few notes which returns at the end of the piece, enclosing a brief B section and followed by a short codetta. This piece is dedicated to my son Luis Matthew.

"Thank you so much for sending your beautiful piece, so clearly inspired by a beautiful child. I like the extensions to the form in the performance vs. the manuscript; they do improve the pacing. I have just the student right now who would benefit from such a piece."
